Service is a Family Affair

Family Service Night brought Live Oak’s families together to serve as a community. The evening proved to be a resounding success, helping to support Live Oak’s community partners in numerous ways.
With tables spread out across the Grand Hall, families worked together on various projects. Moving around the room one saw a table of colorful, fun patches that kids were using to decorate the white baby onesies that would be placed with pacifiers into bags for the children of Family House. There was a table of multi-colored paper, pens, and markers where kids and parents/guardians took turns writing friendly notes to the recipients of Meals on Wheels. Large swaths of cute animal printed fabric were spread out as families teamed up to craft cozy blankets. All around the room were stamps, stencils, scissors, art supplies - the tools of service for the families who were working so hard to provide meaningful and tangible support for the community.

Over the course of the evening, Live Oak families joyfully talked, laughed, and caught up while they worked, sharing a meal in between activity shifts. For the parents/guardians in attendance, it was an opportunity to model the Live Oak service spirit; for the children, it was a chance to further take hands-on action toward being changemakers. All were able to see the quantifiable results of their work.

The impact of our families’ work was certainly felt with the output of support. Leading up to and during the evening, Live Oak families:
  • Collected 1,304 book donations for the Homeless Prenatal Program
  • Created 151 greeting cards for Meals on Wheels
  • Made 22 dog toys for San Francisco Animal Care and Control
  • Assembled 96 baby welcome bags for Family House
  • Crafted 31 blankets for the Homeless Prenatal Program
Thank you to all the families who joined us for Family Service Night! Thank you to the volunteers who made this event possible: Family Service Night leaders, Elizabeth Brown and Catherine Castro, and community partner liaisons, Selina Tobaccowala and Leslie Stephens. Your time and energy is greatly appreciated!
