Ating kumunidad

Live Oak parents and guardians are part of our learning community, taking part in project showcases during the school day, experiential education trips, and impactful service events. Our families lead affinity groups centered around building cultural connections. Visiting authors, researchers, and consultants engage with our parents and guardians to share their expertise and further our collective knowledge. Grade Level Roundtables offer a chance for parents to discuss age-appropriate developmental characteristics and parenting strategies. SPEAK, led by a consortium of independent schools, hosts educational events throughout the year, for our families and faculty. Everyone is a life long learner at Live Oak.

Family Affinity Groups

Live Oak families build community by forming affinity groups and hosting events throughout the year that celebrate and share their diverse cultures and identities. These groups bring together students, parents and guardians, and faculty and staff in inclusive spaces of joyful gathering around important cultural traditions, holidays, and histories. Affinity groups can change and evolve based on the engagement of the school community. Some examples of affinity groups in recent years include the African American Affinity Group, Asian American Pacific Islander Affinity Group, Arab American Affinity Group, Conexiones Latinx Affinity Group, Jewish Affinity Group, Neurodiverse Learners Affinity Group, Pride Affinity Group, and the South Asian Affinity Group.

Parent/Guardian Enrichment

Live Oak offers a range of enrichment events throughout the year for parents and guardians to stay abreast on current trends in education, hear from experts in the education and child development fields, and engage with peers around ways to best support their child's learning and social-emotional growth. In the 2025-26 school year, Live Oak created its own enrichment series featuring two events in the fall and two in the spring that cover topics ranging from how technology is incorporated into student learning, to the purpose around establishing a new dean structure, how Live Oak faculty thoughtfully design curriculum, and more. This series supplements other parent/guardian enrichment opportunities like the ISACS Parent Series virtual webinars and the SPEAK SF series of expert presenters.

Family Service Initiatives

Throughout the year, Live Oak families engage in a variety of service projects and activities that bring the entire Live Oak community together as changemakers in support of the Potrero Hill neighborhood and broader city of San Francisco. Among the numerous service initiatives is the annual Family Service Night that is dedicated to supporting local nonprofits through activities like book donations, creating baby blankets for the Homeless Prenatal Program, making toys for the animals at the San Francisco Animal Care & Control, creating greeting cards for Meals on Wheels, and more. In addition, each grade level takes a turn volunteering to serve monthly dinners at Family House SF and parent and guardian volunteers have spearheaded newer family-oriented projects like preparing and donating bag lunches through a partnership with The Lunchmakers.

Grandparents & Special Friends Day

Each spring, Live Oak opens its doors to welcome the special people in our students’ lives on Grandparents & Special Friends Day. This tradition has long been a way for our students to share about their school days, introduce their teachers and peers, and give their special guests a glimpse into the numerous ways they have been learning and growing throughout the year. Grandparents & Special Friends Day helps develop meaningful connections within the broader Live Oak community that help add depth to our students’ school experience.

Around the Live Oak World

Around the Live Oak World is a schoolwide celebration of culture, identity, and community. Each fall the Parent Guardian Association teams with Live Oak's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee to put on this event in appreciation of the rich cultures and family traditions at our school. The afternoon features a cross-community potluck, music, crafts, games, clothes, stories, and food celebrating the diversity of families, cultures, and identities at Live Oak. Families volunteer to contribute a variety of regional and global foods, lead a culturally significant arts and crafts activity, teach a dance, and so much more. Around the Live Oak World represents a truly collective celebration of our rich cultural connections.
