Middle School Music: Music is in the Air!
Middle school students have been actively engaged in movement, singing, and instrument playing during music class as they prepare for the upcoming Music Festival in April. Their focus has been on learning, practicing, and refining their songs to deliver a polished performance.
As the festival approaches, students are gaining a deeper understanding of what makes a strong performance. They are sharpening their listening skills to ensure precise cues and cutoffs, while also learning that louder and faster isn’t always better. By exploring dynamics and musical expression, they are bringing more depth and artistry to their pieces.
Class discussions have also highlighted the importance of the moments before and after a song—how physical and mental stillness helps set the stage for both performers and audience members to fully experience the music.
Another key focus in music class has been the art of blending within a group. Students are working on matching rhythm, pitch, and volume to create a unified sound when singing or playing instruments together. At the same time, many song arrangements provide opportunities for solo or standout moments, allowing students to build confidence as they step into the spotlight and embrace these roles.
Beyond rehearsing their pieces, students are also gaining behind-the-scenes knowledge of music history, genres, and the artists behind the songs they are performing. Through watching, listening, and reading, they are developing a deeper appreciation for the music and forming a stronger connection to the artists’ work.
Everything will come together next month in the Grand Hall! The fifth and sixth graders will perform on Tuesday, April 1 at 6:30pm (no fooling!), followed by the seventh and eighth graders on Wednesday, April 2 at 6:30pm. Audiences can look forward to a diverse lineup of music, spanning jazz, rock, folk, reggae, pop, and musical theatre—performed through both vocals and a variety of instruments. Each evening of music will last approximately one hour. We can’t wait to see you there and celebrate our achievements together!
