Spring Student-Athlete Spotlight

Live Oak recently recognized two student-athletes with the Spring Student-Athlete Spotlight. Eighth graders Genevieve Sak and Emma Lange, who participated in Live Oak futsal this year, were recognized for their hard work and leadership skills in the classroom and in athletics. Read their interviews below.

Genevieve was interviewed and asked about her thoughts on academics and athletics. Here were her responses:

Q: Ano ang pagkakatulad ng akademiko at athletics?

A: The thing I find the most similar between academics and athletics is that you have to put effort in and be open to trying new things in order to excel.

A: I've learned through athletics that you have to communicate with your teammates, even if it's saying simple things like “You can turn” or “Man on.” This has actually helped me when I work with my classmates on a team project because I am more likely to ask them about their opinions and share my ideas.

A: I think I find myself working equally hard in both but just in different ways. For example, I work physically harder in athletics, but mentally harder in academics.

Q: What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of athletics?

A: I feel like the most challenging aspect of athletics is that there is rarely one answer to a question I ask my coach. You can train and get all the technical stuff right, but once you're in the game it's up to you and your teammates to figure out how to be creative and score goals.

Q: Ano ang paborito mong isport?

A: Soccer

Q: Ano ang paborito mong subject?

A: Math

Emma was also interviewed on some of these same topics and here were her responses:

Q: Ano ang pagkakatulad ng akademiko at athletics?

A: In my opinion Athletics and Academics have many similarities. They both require hard work, persistence and teamwork. If you work hard you can succeed in both academics and athletics.

A: I put similar amounts of effort into both academics and athletics. I try to keep a balance of focusing on schoolwork and also making sure I am still practicing and putting similar effort into sports.

Q: Ano ang paborito mong isport?

A: My favorite sport is soccer. I have played it since fourth grade and really enjoy it. I also love being able to bond and connect with new people through a team.

Q: Ano ang paborito mong subject?

A: My favorite subject is science because I find it really interesting to learn how the world works on many different levels.

Q: Have you had teammates that have made you a better athlete?

A: This year my teammates on the varsity futsal team have been really supportive and kind both on and off the court. They always make sure everyone feels included and help others improve their skills.
